GENERAL GUIDELINES: Measure your dog in a standing position - NEVER in a sitting or lying position. ALWAYS USE A MEASURING TAPE (OR PIECE OF STRING IF NO MEASURING TAPE AVAILABLE - IF USING STRING, YOU'LL NEED A RIGID RULER TO COMPLETE THE MEASUREMENT) Remember, all size charts give "APPROXIMATE" Sizes based on weight, lenght, girth, circumference measurements and the "average/normal" size of a breed. We all know that there are variations in all breeds, and mixed breeds add even more variations. Like their human companions, dogs come in stout, short, lean, long, and average sizes. The best method for determining the size you need for your dog, whether for collars, boots, or clothes, is to MEASURE!! Following measuring guidelines for the specific item and measure carefully and accurately. PAW SIZE: Measure paw from heel to toe (including to tip of toe nails) - If using string to measure with, cut string accurately at the lenght needed for paw size, next measure the string with a rigid ruler - measure carefully and accurately. XX-Large Great Dane, Mastiff approx up to 5 1/2" Paw Size X-Large Boxer, Akita approx up to 4 3/4" Paw Size Large German Shepherd, Rottweiler approx up to 4 1/4" Paw Size Medium Retriever, Labrador, Bulldog approx up to 3 3/4" Paw Size Small Beagle, Sheltie, Fox Terrier approx up to 3 1/4" Paw Size X-Small Pomeranian, Lhasa Apso, Pug approx up to 2 3/4" Paw Size XX-Small Jack Russell, Toy Poodle approx up to 2 1/4" Paw Size NOTE: Although most breeds are not listed in the above sizing chart, most customers know the size catagorie of their dogs. Having said that, we know that many dogs of all breeds vary in size and weight from the "normal/average" size/weight of that breed. The best method for determining the size boot/shoe you need for your pet is to measure your dog's paws according to the measuring guidelines noted above. Compare your dog's paw measurement to the size chart above to find the appropriate size.
NECK SIZE: (for collars, the weight and width of the collar must be taken into consideration along with the appropriate "neck size" . A collar too wide and/or too heavy for a small dog is uncomfortable and burdensome. Likewise, a collar too narrow and/or too lightweight might not provide enough strength for a large, strong dog.) Measure your dog's neck from a few inches down from his head using a measuring tape (or piece of string). Bring the measuring tape or string around his neck, pulling it snug but not tight. For medium size dog, allowing room for two fingers to be placed flat against his neck under the measuring tape or string. For a small dog, under 20 pounds, use only one finger, for a very large dog, three fingers may be best.(after determining neck size when using string, measure the string with a rigid ruler - measure carefully) You are aiming for a snug fit - not a tight fit nor a loose fit. A collar must be slightly larger than the dog's neck circumference (for small dogs, about an inch larger, for medium to large dogs, about two inches larger. The "fingers under the measuring tape" test is a good "rule of thumb" - but don't use your thumb!! Never allow your dog to wear a collar that is too loose. Your dog might get caught on something, be unable to free himself, and continue pulling, at times with devastating consequences. A collar that is too tight is not only uncomfortable for your pet but could compromise your dog's breathing, cause frequent coughing, and result in diminished respirations and a decrease in his oxygen supply. If your measurement is at or very close to the upper end of a size, we recommend your consider purchasing the next larger size collar. Many manufacturerers of dog collars consider the length to be the measurement from the end of the buckle to the last hole (maximum adjustment allowance). The collars we carry from Coastal Pet Products are measured from buckle end to last hole to determine collar length. (Not all manufactuerers use this measurement method - It is important to know how a manufacturer determines collar length). Check your dog's collar frequently, at least every few months (more frequently for growing puppies - at least monthly). Check fit - not too tight (use the "fingers under the collar test" each time). Not too loose. When fastened for proper fit, collar should not be able to be slipped off over dog's head, nor should there be more than two finger space between collar and dog's neck (one finger space for very small dogs). Check for fraying, splits, tears, or any weak areas (be sure to check that the buckle is securely attached and in proper working condition). There are many types of collars available in a variety of styles and materials. One word of caution, when buying a collar for a very large, and/or strong dog, seriously consider purchasing a collar with a sturdy, metal buckle. While the "snap-together" buckles are convenient and stylish, they are usually no match for a large or strong dog that is intent on pulling away. ONE VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT OF YOUR DOG'S HEALTH AND SAFETY IS A PROPERLY FITTING COLLAR!

The pressure exerted by a dog's jaw can put tremendous stress on their teeth. These sizes shown above are only guidelines. If your dog is between sizes or is an especially powerful chewer, we recommend choosing a larger size - large enough to encourage chewing from the side, rather than from top to bottom. Many little dogs are powerful chewers and may need a larger size. If you have more than one dog in your household, select chews appropriate for the largest, strongest chewer. Remember to alway supervise the use of any dog chew or toy. PUPPY GUIDELINES: Use Nylabone PUPPY SPECIFIC Products until permanent adult teeth develop. To ensure the safety of your pet: Aways supervise your dog whenever given a chew toy or treat. Select the right size chew for your pet. Refer to and follow the package instructions and guidelines. |
